AN OVERVIEW OF MINERALS RESERVES IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH

Geologically, Arunachal Pradesh is the least explored State and most of the mineral resources lie hidden underground. Nevertheless, preliminary studies of geological formations promise important economic mineral deposit in considerable quantity. On the basis of the explorations so far carried out by GSI, CIL, OIL, MECL, CMPDIL & APMDTCL, mineral reserves reported in Arunachal Pradesh are as detailed below:

MINERAL POTENSTIAL VIS-À-VIS INDUSTRIALISATION
A
t present, Parsuram Cement Ltd. Tezu is the only mineral-based industry in AP. It is based on Tidding limestone deposits. Thus, APMDTCL is aware of the great need for taking suitable steps toward exploration & exploitation of the mineral resources of the State mainly with a view to set up more minerals based industries for its advancement. Proved reserves of mineral resources detailed above are capable of supporting following industries
1.    Fertilizer plant, refractory unit based on dolomite deposits.
2.    Calcium carbide manufacturing unit and cement plant based on Tidding,          Hunli & Pangin limestone.
3.    Gasification & cooking plants based on coal deposits of Kharsang (Namchik         - Namphuk) area.
4.    Refractory, pencil, abrasives manufacturing units based on graphite deposits.
5.    Cutting & Polishing units of decorative and building stones like granite,
       granodiorite, marble, and gemstones.

CHALLENGES
# Remoteness of the mineral deposits from consumption centers resulting in
   prohibitive transport cost.
# Complete lack of infrastructure and high cost of infrastructural development.
# Protection to forest overlying mineral deposits.

STRATEGIES

  • Make value addition by setting up mineral-based industries, beneficiation plants etc. in the vicinity of mineral reserves to set off high transport cost of raw mineral.
  • Tie-up with normal infrastructural development programs of PWD, RWD, Industries Dept. Etc., Power & transport subsidy.
  • Invitation to Private entrepreneur & other Government agencies for joint venture.
  • Adoption of ecologically friendly mining methods and post mining reclamation measures.
